The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia seeks an energetic, motivated, and detail-oriented individual to join our team of Intake Specialists, serving as an initial point of contact and resource for members of our client community.

As the District’s oldest and largest civil legal services program, Legal Aid’s mission is to make justice real—in individual and systemic ways—for persons living in poverty in the District of Columbia. Our clients are individuals and families, predominantly of color, in need of legal assistance in areas ranging from housing and domestic violence law to public benefits and consumer law. Legal Aid attorneys provide our clients with high-quality, zealous legal representation, while also seeking systemic solutions to the problems they face, through litigation, court reform, and legislative and agency advocacy.

The Intake Specialist/Legal Assistant will work as part of a dynamic team of attorneys and staff committed to ensuring effective and efficient delivery of services to individuals seeking legal assistance. The Intake Specialist/Legal Assistant will be based out of Legal Aid’s main NW office but may also help staff its community office in SE Washington, D.C. Note: Legal Aid is currently operating remotely, but has a hybrid work plan scheduled to take effect in June 2022. Based on this plan, some in-person work will be required starting on August 1, 2022.


Assist Applicants Seeking Representation from Legal Aid

• Serving as an initial point of contact, primarily by telephone, for persons seeking assistance from Legal Aid

• Collecting information from callers to screen for eligibility for Legal Aid’s services and providing referral information when appropriate

• Conducting in-depth intake interviews by telephone and/or in-person

• Screening online intake applications

• Assisting with management and design of online intake application portal

• Ensuring that referral resource information is accurate and updated regularly

• Creating intake, self-help, and outreach materials

• Managing undergraduate student interns

Client Database Management

• Assisting with client database design, management, and data integrity

• Producing statistical reports and analyses drawn from client database

• Tracking and analyzing intake trends

General Administrative Tasks

• Providing general administrative support

• Providing administrative support to Legal Aid’s intern program

• Working collaboratively and effectively with co-workers to ensure coverage of administrative and legal assistant needs throughout the office

Required Skills and Experience:

Candidates for the Intake Specialist/Legal Assistant position should have the following:

• A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments

• Strong interpersonal skills and highly effective oral communication skills, particularly telephonic communication

• Effective written communication skills

• Willingness to take initiative in managing projects

• Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a diverse team of colleagues

• Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with clients, staff and partner organizations

• Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Microsoft applications (familiarity working with online databases helpful but not required)

• Familiarity with legal and/or social services systems through lived and/or prior professional experience preferred

• Fluency or proficiency in Amharic, Spanish, or another language prevalent in Legal Aid's client community strongly preferred

• Availability to make a two-year minimum commitment strongly preferred

Salary and Benefits:

The Intake Specialist/Legal Assistant will be paid in accordance with Legal Aid’s salary scale based on years of experience, starting at $44,768 for a candidate with less than one year of relevant experience, followed by a salary step each year thereafter. Generous benefits package includes fully paid health insurance (for the employee), annual discretionary retirement match, 12 paid holidays, three personal days and generous annual and sick leave allotments starting at 12 days of vacation and 15 days of sick leave per year.
